Know Your Numbers

Health metrics like blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, BMI, and waist circumference are more than just numbers—they’re valuable indicators that point to where your health needs the most attention.

This guide outlines the optimal ranges for each metric, helping you evaluate your current health and identify potential risks. Understanding these numbers is a key first step toward making informed choices and living a healthier life.

Blood Pressure (BP)

  • Normal: <120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120-129/<80 mmHg
  • Hypertension (Stage 1): 130-139/80-89 mmHg
  • Hypertension (Stage 2): ≥140/90 mmHg

Cholesterol Levels (mg/dL)

  • Total Cholesterol: <200 (Desirable), 200-239 (Borderline High), ≥240 (High)
  • LDL ("Bad" Cholesterol): <100 (Optimal), 100-129 (Near-Optimal), 130-159 (Borderline High), 160-189 (High), ≥190 (Very High)
  • HDL ("Good" Cholesterol): ≥60 (Optimal), <40 (Low, risk for heart disease)
  • Triglycerides: <150 (Normal), 150-199 (Borderline High), 200-499 (High), ≥500 (Very High)

Blood Sugar Levels

  • Fasting Blood Glucose: <100 mg/dL (Normal), 100-125 mg/dL (Prediabetes), ≥126 mg/dL (Diabetes)
  • A1C (3-Month Average Blood Sugar Level): <5.7% (Normal), 5.7-6.4% (Prediabetes), ≥6.5% (Diabetes)

Body Mass Index (BMI) Categories

  • Underweight: <18.5
  • Normal Weight: 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight: 25 – 29.9
  • Obesity (Class 1): 30 – 34.9
  • Obesity (Class 2): 35 – 39.9
  • Severe Obesity (Class 3): ≥40

Waist Circumference (Risk for Heart Disease & Diabetes)

  • Men: >40 inches (102 cm) = Increased risk
  • Women: >35 inches (88 cm) = Increased risk
