Mpox Guidance
Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a disease caused by infection with a virus, known as Monkeypox virus.
What is Mpox?
- Mpox is a rare disease that does not naturally occur in the U.S. and historically has occurred in the U.S. in association with travel to areas of Africa where it is endemic or contact with imported animals.
- Symptoms can include a rash that may involve the genitals or other areas of the body such as the face/extremities and flu-like symptoms but can vary in severity between individuals. Most people with mpox will get a rash but some may develop no other symptoms.
Vaccination
- The primary vaccine available is JYNNEOS, and it is indicated for individuals who are at high risk for mpox or known exposure to a person with mpox.
- There is no FDA-approved treatment for mpox.
- Please visit the CDC website for an overview of the risk criteria for vaccination.
