The holiday season is a time for celebration, joy, and togetherness. With more social gatherings and events, it can be challenging to prioritize your nutrition. However, there are ways you can savor the season without compromising your wellbeing.

Dr. Melissa Sundermann, Summus MD and Lifestyle Medicine Physician, provides five ways you can prioritize healthy eating this month—while still indulging in holiday festivities.

  1. Prioritize portion control.
Enjoying holiday feasts is a tradition, but moderation is key. Instead of piling your plate high with every dish, savor smaller portions of your favorites. This allows you to relish the flavors without overloading on calories, helping you maintain a healthy balance.

  2. Fill up on fiber!
Amid the decadent holiday spread, don't forget about fiber-rich foods. Vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can help you feel full and satisfied while providing essential nutrients. Consider incorporating colorful salads, roasted veggies, and whole-grain options into your meals to promote digestive health.

  3. Hydrate mindfully.
It's easy to overlook hydration during the holiday festivities, especially with tempting sugary beverages and alcoholic drinks. Make a conscious effort to stay hydrated by sipping water throughout the day. Water not only helps with digestion but also supports overall wellbeing, leaving you feeling refreshed and ready to celebrate.

  4. Choose smart indulgences.
While it's okay to treat yourself during the holidays, opt for smarter indulgences. Choose desserts made with healthier ingredients, such as fruits and nuts, and limit the intake of sugary treats. Additionally, consider enjoying dark chocolate, which contains antioxidants and may have health benefits when consumed in moderation.

  5. Plan and prepare healthy options.
Take control of your holiday nutrition by planning and preparing nutritious meals and snacks. If you're attending a gathering, consider bringing a healthy dish to share. This way, you ensure that there are wholesome options available, making it easier for everyone to make nutritious choices amid the festive spread.
