Structure Without Stress: Creating a Flexible Summer Routine
Your summer doesn't need to be packed with activities to be meaningful. A flexible routine gives you the freedom to enjoy it - with just enough structure to make it work.
Melissa Furdyn, LCSW, Mental Health and Wellbeing Clinical Lead at Summus, offers tips to help you make the most of this season while creating a routine tailored to your family's lifestyle.
1. Use anchors, not schedules.
Rather than following a rigid schedule, build your day around 2–3 consistent anchor points, such as:
- Morning or bedtime routines
- Meal and snack times
- Outdoor play or quiet time
- Creative activities or screen time blocks
- Family check-ins
2. Try weekly themes.
Keep things fun and ease decision fatigue by introducing simple weekly themes like:
- Make-It Monday (crafts, baking)
- Take-a-Trip Tuesday (park, museum, library)
- Water Wednesday (sprinklers, pool, bath fun)
- Thoughtful Thursday (reading, journaling)
- Free-Play Friday (child-led play or screen time with limits)
3. Make a family bucket list!
Involve your kids in choosing 10-20 fun summer goals - it's a great way to encourage family bonding and build excitement. A few possibilities include:
- Create a lemonade stand
- Watch a movie outdoors
- Visit a local museum, zoo, or library
- Start a simple garden or grow something in a pot
- Learn a new recipe or bake something together
4. Protect downtime.
Unstructured time is essential for creativity, emotional rest, and independent play. Don't over-schedule - leave room for kids (and you!) to just be.
5. Use visual aids.
Create a simple picture schedule to show what comes next. It reduces power struggles and helps little ones feel secure in the flow of the day.
6. Focus on connection, not perfection.
Some days won't go as planned - and that's okay. A flexible routine supports mental health, not stress. What matters most is connection, not productivity.
