Allergies are your body's overreaction to usually harmless things, like pollen or insect stings....
5 Tips for Healthy Summer Skin
This summer, it's essential to prioritize protecting your skin while enjoying outdoor activities. Here are five proactive measures that can help you prevent sunburn, reduce the likelihood of skin cancer, and avoid allergic reactions.
- Don't underestimate the power of sunscreen! Sunscreen protects you from sunburns but also slows down skin aging. Always apply sunscreen before going outdoors, which will protect you from sunburn, skin cancer, and premature skin aging, like wrinkles and age spots. I recommend applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to all exposed skin.
- Protect your lips. Don’t forget to protect your lips, because skin cancer can also develop on the lips. It’s best to apply a lip balm with sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
- Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds emit UV radiation, which causes skin cancer. Self-tanning products, such as tanning lotions, are a good alternative for people who want to have a tanned look.
- Check your skin regularly. Spots that look different than your other spots or moles that itch, bleed, or change color, may be early warning signs of skin cancer. If you notice any concerning spots, see a board-certified dermatologist, who can evaluate the areas and let you know if further intervention is needed.
- Familiarize yourself with poisonous plants. You’re likely spending more time outside this summer - including hiking, swimming, or picnicking. Learn about the appearance of poison ivy, oak, and sumac, so that you can avoid them. These plants can cause a rash called allergic contact dermatitis, which can be itchy and painful.
